Members and guests, from the tri-state area, of the Ottawa County Genealogical Society met recently at the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum. Those attending were greeted by Phyllis Abbott, Museum Curator. Group discussion centered around doing family history research in a museum setting.
The archive, housed in a fire-safe vault, contains a wide variety of documents, photos, books and maps, of great interest to these members. Mrs. Abbott explained that some of the documents date back to the 1870s. The group was then free to tour the museum which includes an extensive collection of artifacts, documents and photos. These include, but are not limited to, local town and county history, the Neutral Strip, tri-state mining district, Native Americans, Civil War activity, Route 66 and education.
