The Ottawa County Genealogical Society will meet Monday, July 15th, in the Community Room of the First National Bank. 1749 N. Main Street, Miami, Oklahoma.  Refreshments will be served at 6:00 p.m., with the program to follow at 6:30 p.m.

The program will be given by Earleene Spaulding of Baxter Springs, Kansas.  She will discuss the Civil War veterans of the border town and the National Plot in the local cemetery.  A well-known historian and genealogical researcher, Mrs. Spaulding served the Baxter Springs Historical Society and Heritage Society for many years.  She currently serves as Recording Historian at the museum in Baxter Springs and assists other genealogists and historians with research of the tri-state area, for their personal use and for articles, papers, and books to be published.

“To save hours of research, I began to pull articles and obits from 1869 thru 1935 newspapers in the Historical Society’s archives and placing them in designated files.” she states.  This material has become invaluable to many interested in the history and genealogy of the area

She is the author of “Civil War Veterans Buried in the Baxter Springs, Kansas Cemetery” which contains information, obituaries and photos of veterans buried there.  The book is in the second printing and has been well received in historical and genealogical areas, as well as in the community.

The public is invited to attend Mrs. Spaulding’s presentation on Monday evening. Luretta Williams, President of the society, will serve as hostess.
